QUENCH NOT THE SPIRIT
MEMORY VERSE: 1 Thessalonians 5:19 “Quench not the Spirit”
The modern church sadly is moving away from the supernatural as it seeks to do the work of the gospel with human methods, logic and wisdom. There are many churches who due to church growth principles and a bid to have “welcoming” services have inadvertently hindered the move of the Holy Spirit. They have erased speaking in tongues from their services, removing and hindering the showcasing of the gifts of the Spirit all in a bid to be acceptable to the world. This is foolish; it is not possible to achieve a supernatural assignment with natural strength. Supernatural activities require supernatural strength to accomplish them. The Holy Spirit must always be given free course in every church service, in every gathering of saints. We must never hinder his move or influence. Now, many churches actually seek to limit the demonstrations of the supernatural because of excesses on the parts of participants but I believe it is better to have a church burning like a wild fire than one as quiet as a graveyard. Quench not the Spirit!
If we study in scripture, we find that there was emphasis on the demonstration of the power of God 1 Corinthians 2:4 “And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power”; 1 Corinthians 4:20 “For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power”. It is a kingdom of power; it is a supernatural kingdom, a supernatural church. We cannot have church without supernatural occurrences. Church with the Holy Spirit is nothing more than a social club. So every church should be a centre where the desire for the supernatural is cultivated, where the saints of God are taught how to flow with the Holy Spirit decently and in order. It is a place for them to discover who they are, what they have and what they can do. This is church, this is what we do.
CONFESSION: I desire the spiritual, I walk in all of the gifts of the Spirit, I walk in all of them in increasing frequency and intensity. Amen
