SPEAKING IN TONGUES
Memory Verse: Acts 2:4 “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance”
The subject of speaking in tongues is one of the most controversial subjects in Christianity; it has formed the basis of classification in all of Christianity. We have the group whom declares that they do not speak in tongues, that speaking in tongues is not for all Christians. We have that a lot of Christians because of the lack of understanding of what speaking in tongues is all about have missed out on the blessings that are inherent in this wonderful gift.
Now, what is speaking in tongues, what does it mean, why is it important? 1 Corinthians 14:2 “for he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries” to speak in tongues means to speak the language of the born again man indwelled by the Holy Spirit. It is not an earthly language neither is it an earthly dialect. It’s a language that is from the believer to God and vice versa. Speaking in tongues is a means to an end. 1 Corinthians 14:4 “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church” It’s a means of spiritual edification. The word “edify” is the Greek Oikodomeo which means to build and by extension to charge like a battery. When a man speaks in tongue, he’s actually building up his inner man; he is charging his spirit like a battery till he is fully charged.
What’s the importance of this and what does it do? Well, a man that has his spirit fully charged easily receives information and revelation from the Spirit of God, he is very sensitive to that realm. The bible shows us that we have been commanded to be filled with the Spirit and not be drunk with wine Ephesians 5:18 “And be not drunk with wine wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit”, we are also shown that the act of been filled with the Spirit is activated by speaking spiritual words so we drink of the Spirit by speaking. Speaking in tongues is not a religious exercise; it’s an ability that is consistent with our new life in Christ.
CONFESSION: I declare that the gifts of the Spirit is my inheritance in Christ, I speak in tongues always, I drink of the Spirit to overflowing always, I excel in this gift in Jesus name. Amen
