THE LAW WAS A SHADOW 2
Memory verse: Hebrews 10:1 “For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect”
We said yesterday that the law revealed the fallen nature of man rather than the character and nature of God. Now when you study the Old Testament it is important that you understand that many of the utterances and actions represented in there though inspired by God was not truly revelatory of His nature and character. Everything they did in the Old Testament was through the revelation of the Law of Moses. But the bible says that the law is a shadow that word shadow in the Greek is “skia” which means shade, a sketch or darkness of error or an adumbration so the Old Testament saints because they were spiritually dead and separated from God could not receive the revelation of God in his fullness. They saw him in a shadow. They did not see God as He was; they saw Him as they were.
Let me show you some things from scriptures. James 1:17 “ Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” here we see that God only gives good and perfect gifts and He is the Father of lights which means if he is the father of lights and light is who he is, then there is no room for a shadow in him. There is no variableness with Him and there is no changing in Him. He is light. James 1:13 “ Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man”. God does not do evil, doesn’t tempt with evil and cannot be tempted with evil. He is the father of light. There is no evil in light.
So many times when we look at the deaths, the sickness, the famine, the destruction in the Old Testament attributed to God we must examine and come to the conclusion that the writers though inspired by God to write wrote through the dark lenses of sin and death and as such attributed every act of tragedy to God. But we now in the New Testament behold the Father of light with an open face and see him clearly without any shadows. We see him as he is. A God of goodness and mercy even in His Justice and in His judgment, He is merciful.
CONFESSION: I see God as He is in the face of Jesus Christ, I am born again, I am born of light. The father of light is my father, no variableness, no shadows.
