HOW TO STUDY THE SCRIPTURES 5

Memory Verse: 2 Timothy 3:15 “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

The scriptures contain revelation and information of God’s plan for redemption. God is plain that we can read about him and understand his nature through what is written.

Jesus often times referred those who listened to him to the scriptures.

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. John 5:39

But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him Matthew 12:3

Have you not read? He says

Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? Matthew 12:5

So by reading, we can know the mind of God.

You cannot interpret God’s word properly unless you are a student of it .

You must read, meditate and practice it to become acquainted with it.

In the Old Testament there was a frequency to which they were supposed to give to reading aloud.

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Joshua 1:8

Here it is day and night.

So there was a prescription to it.

And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them: Deuteronomy 17:19

To be read every day.

In the New Testament, it wasn’t anything different.

They were to give themselves to reading.

And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the epistle from Laodicea. Colossians 4:16

I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren. 1 Thessalonians 5:27

Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. Ephesians 3:4-5

So reading brings understanding.

It is important for believers to develop the culture of reading and studying the scriptures.

Learn to become familiar with the scriptures.

Be able to quote copiously from it.

Read and read until you understand it enough to rightly divide it!

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15

Remember, the scriptures are able to make one wise unto salvation.

Then the revelation of the scriptures are able to give and inheritance amongst them that are sanctified.

And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. Acts 20:32

Amen.

CONFESSION: I give myself to the study of the bible. I am able to rightly divide it. I read, meditate, digest the scriptures.
